# Connecting Jira through MCP

## No ready-made integration, but a workable route

Unlike ClickUp, Jira does not have a dedicated Gen8 integration. We prefer saying that immediately to your discovering it during implementation. Jira is accessible through an MCP server or custom Jira API integration, and that works, but it requires a different agreement from a connector you enable.

**Route:** MCP
**Components:** Jira, through an MCP server or custom integration with the Jira API

## What the integration can do

Capabilities depend on your chosen route.

**Through an MCP server.** A server exposes Jira functions as workflow tools: create or find issues, update a status or field. The server determines the exact capabilities, not Gen8 — and may change without your involvement.

**Through custom API development.** We build the calls your workflow needs using your designated fields. More development, but full control over reads and writes, and an integration you can have reviewed.

Both routes start realistically narrow: creating issues from approved proposals and reading issues for progress reporting. Updating other people's existing issues is an extension requiring its own assessment.

## What you can *automate* with this

A few examples of work you can hand over through this integration. We work out what fits your organisation together during scoping.

### An issue from an approved proposal

Through an MCP server or custom integration, the workflow creates an issue in the right project after someone has seen the proposal.

### A progress picture from your issues

Issues are read and summarized into an overview of work progress without changing anything.

### Update a status or field, with approval

As an extension, the workflow can update a status or field. Because that affects a team's work, a person always reviews it.

## Does this work look familiar? Or does your process run on another system?

Tell us which work you want to hand over. We help you think through the integration and route, even if your system is not listed here yet.

## What access is needed

Jira access uses a service account or token created by your administrator, with the projects and permissions the workflow needs — no more. Credentials are stored in encrypted form and do not appear in workflow text.

An **external MCP server** raises an additional question: who runs it, where and what happens to data it sees along the way? That lies outside Gen8 and our EU processing. Your administrator must weigh it before building; we raise it explicitly rather than letting enthusiasm for a working demo carry the decision.

## Where approval is required

Because this is a route built per environment rather than a proven Gen8 integration, we deliberately keep approval stricter and longer. Every Jira write is a proposal a person sees: project, type, priority and text.

A new issue from an approved proposal is the starting point. Updating existing issues retains approval because it affects a team's work outside this workflow. Every step is logged, including rejected proposals — often the most instructive in the first weeks.

## What we can demonstrate

Gen8 does have its own tool to discover external MCP servers and use their tools in workflows, but **no Jira integration of its own**. The [Gmail to Jira](<https://gen8.app/en/mogelijkheden/gmail-naar-jira/>) workflow describes the same route with the same outstanding evidence question. [ClickUp](<https://gen8.app/en/integraties/clickup/>) does have its own integration; the practical meaning of MCP and custom routes is explained in [MCP, API and custom development](<https://gen8.app/en/integraties/mcp-api-maatwerk/>).

## Frequently asked questions

Why does Gen8 not have its own Jira integration?

It simply has not been built yet. Jira is still accessible, but a Jira workflow requires build time and a maintenance agreement that a ready-made integration does not.

Is the MCP route secure?

That depends on who runs the server and where. A vendor's server differs from one published by an unknown party; your administrator should make that choice.

Would ClickUp be better?

If you are free to choose, ClickUp is the shorter route today because it has its own integration. If your organization already uses Jira, switching is rarely the cheapest solution.

Who maintains the integration?

We agree and document that beforehand. Maintenance on a custom route is a real cost, not a footnote.

## Which systems do you use?

Tell us which process you want to connect. We explain which route fits, which permissions are needed and where people keep making decisions.
